Crossroads Juvenile Center

POSTERS, PHOTOGRAPHY, & PODCASTING

This spring we introduced a slightly new installment of our Intentional Storytellers Academy. This intense journey into storytelling includes posters, history, the arts, storytelling, photography, mindfulness, self-reflection, and more.

PODCASTING

The Bklyn Combine Intentional Storytellers Academy Live Podcast Recording & Community Gathering

On June 10th, we gathered for a special live event to showcase and celebrate the voices and visions of our Crossroads scholars. These young creatives focused on podcasting and storytelling through the art of conversation, research, and analysis. This was a step in teaching the Crossroads residents how empower themselves by telling their own stories.

ZINE FEST / PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT

The Intentional Storytellers Academy Zine Festival & Photo Exhibit was a reclaiming of their narrative—their voices and stories matter.

The residents at Crossroads Juvenile Center worked alongside The Brooklyn Combine to craft personal and collective narratives through creative writing, poetry, critical thinking, photography, and illustration. For 5 months, our young creatives have engaged in photography, self-reflection, critical writing, and storytelling, meeting mentors in journalism and the arts to explore ideas around identity, self-reflection, accountability, and self-determination.

DEBATE CLUB

In June of 2024, the Bklyn Combine conducted a Debate program at Crossroads Juvenile Center in Brownsville, Brooklyn. The young residents culminated the ending of an exceptional program with a “Great Debate” event. At the event, our scholars debated in a team format concerning social topics, such as whether or not juveniles should be detained. This event was attended by city officials responsible for the juvenile correctional facilities, attorneys, educators, scholars, formerly incarcerated individuals who have changed their lives around for the better, invested community members, and others.
